B. Major JCA Roseveare, 3rd Parachute Sqn RE

By Andrea Guidoni

A Jeep and its trailer disembark from a Horsa on Landing Zone "N" near Ranville. In order to secure their left flank during the Normandy landings against a possible German counterattack, the Allies decided to commit an airborne division on the east bank of the Orne to hold the ground while waiting for the amphibious offensive. The British 6th Airborne Division was selected to fulfill this mission, which was not limited to simply acting as a shield to protect the flanks of Operation Overlord: once the city of Caen was under Allied control, this airborne unit had to relaunch the offensive towards the Seine.
