Rheinmetall-Borsig was awarded the contract for this project and chose to mount the 5 cm PaK 38 anti-tank gun, a relatively powerful weapon for the time, on the chassis of an armoured ammunition tractor, the Borgward VK3.02. This choice of chassis is interesting because the Borgward VK3.02, originally designed as a supply vehicle, offered a mobile and lightweight base, but was not designed for direct combat.
